Potterne Project
A new project is being put together by the WAFG, led by Jon Sanigar and Phil Andrews, with the aim of undertaking an archaeological evaluation of the site of high status medieval manor house in Potterne, Wiltshire.
A series of trial trenches will be be excavated to explore certain anomalies that were identified during the course of a geophysical survey carried out by the group in 2017. Extensive archaeological evaluations and geophysical surveys were carried out in 1974, 2002 and 2006, but after reviewing the results, it was felt that more work could be carried out to establish the function, dating, phasing and state of preservation of the building. The reports of the geophysical survey of the site can be downloaded via the Report/Grey Literature page. |
The manor itself seems to date to the 13th century, with continued use into the 17th century, whereby it was abandoned and left as a ruin. The structure itself was probably used as a local 'quarry' for the population of Potterne to build their own homes.
