Newton Toney Field Walking
September 2010
The AFG were invited by local villagers to carry out field walking in a field that was about to become permanent chalkdownland pasture as part of the newly created Winterbourne Downs RSPB reserve.
Field walking was carried out by a number of AFG members and local villagers and a metal detecting survey was also undertaken. Roman pottery, brick and tile and a number of coins were found. Large lumps of chalk and flint were noted on the edge of the field as well.
The site has been interpreted as a Romano-British settlement though more work is needed to understand its full extent and nature. A report is currently being produced and in the future some geophysics could be undertaken.
