Bremhill Project
The WAFG have been asked to support a community project that is looking into the history of the parish of Bremhill, Wiltshire. The aim of the project is to engage the local community in producing a parish history, and a chapter for inclusion in the next volume of the Victoria County History of Wiltshire.
As part of this project it has been proposed that an archaeological survey be undertaken on a site close to Elm Farm, Foxham, Wiltshire. There has been some previous metal detecting, under permission, with reported finds of coins, brooches, and other material dating to the Romano-British period. Although now pasture, previous field walking when the site was under plough, has also identified possible building material dating from the same period. It is therefore believed that a possible Romano-British building or settlement lies within the field or very close by.
The Wiltshire Historic Environment Records shows no record of any significant monuments in the immediate vicinity, although recent archaeological evaluation work at MOD Lyneham has identified a small Romano-British settlement approximately 0.5km to the north-east of the proposed site.
LIDAR imagery appears to reveal a slight bank running north to south across the site, and geophysical survey conducted by the WAFG has identified possible field boundaries, track ways, and other anomalies. The next steps are to work with the Bremhill project team to design a community archaeology project, that will involve targeted excavation to evaluate archaeological survival, secure dating evidence and assess opportunity for further research.
